Winter shut down procedure

For many of us, Fall is the time for putting our Corvette into hibernation.  Below are the steps that I use when storing my C7 over the winter, note that your procedure may differ.

Corvette winter storage (around Dec. 1 of each year):

  1. Change oil and filter

  2. Wash car exterior / interior and wheels

  3. Add Stabil fuel stabilizer as per directions using plastic fuel tube extension (located in trunk storage well) and fill the tank completely with premium fuel.  Drive car approx. 10-minutes to distribute Stabil throughout the fuel system.

  4. Over-inflate tires by ~ 3 psi (33-35 psi) to prevent flat spots from sitting.

  5. Place foam rubber floor mats under where the car will sit.  Mats reduce moisture from concrete permeating car.  Be sure to avoid covering floor drain.

  6. Fold in both mirrors.  Back car into garage, straddling mats.  Put the car in “Park”, do NOT use the electric brake. Remove any food or liquid from inside the vehicle.  Place one desiccant pack in the trunk and one in the cabin.   Unlock doors, but keep windows fully closed.

  7. Connect battery tender (trickle charger).  Plugs into the charger port located above the battery in the trunk.  Use a thin rag or similar to protect paint when closing the trunk lid during storage.  Plug the charger into the wall outlet, and leave the charger on for the entire time in storage.

  8. After the car is completely cool, cover exhaust tips with heavy duty aluminum foil to keep critters out.  Secure foil on each tip w/ rubber bands.

  9. Place car cover on vehicle.

  10. Notify State Farm of car being shut down for the winter season.  Get proof of shut down coverage.
